Letter from the Publishers

October, 2004

Welcome to the first anniversary issue of 2e: Twice-Exceptional Newsletter! It’s been a year since we began publishing. During that time, we’ve enjoyed bringing you information that we hope makes it easier to understand, parent, and teach the 2e kids in your life. We’ve also enjoyed having the chance to meet many of you in person, by phone, and by e-mail. Your feedback and encouragement have made our efforts all worthwhile.

Many of the articles in this issue are aimed at helping to get the new school year off to a good start. One offers parents and teachers some strategies for working with Asperger’s students. Other articles look at different ways to provide support for twice-exceptional students in the classroom – support through formal plans like IEPs and 504’s, support through informal plans like the individualized educational plans that Dr. Karen Rogers recommends, and support through providing accommodations and setting goals and objectives for student performance.

Also in this issue we look at two publications that are raising awareness of the needs of our country’s gifted students – the newly released report on grade acceleration called A Nation Deceived and the book published earlier this year titled Genius Denied.

Finally, along with our regular columns and features, you’ll find some conference coverage from down under, the AAEGT Conference held in Melbourne, Australia, courtesy of one of our 2e Newsletter subscribers.

In September we sent out the first of our monthly e-mail briefings. If you didn’t receive yours, or if we don’t have your e-mail address and you’d like to receive the briefings, let us know. The briefings will contain news items; pointers to interesting, 2e-relevant locations on the web; information about what’s going on at 2e Newsletter; and opportunities to provide feedback on various issues. (To those who responded to the questions we asked in the first briefing, thanks! See the results in your next briefing later this month.)

With the briefing, we may run into issues with spam-control software on our Internet service provider and on your computer. If you have spam-control software on your computer, you might want to specifically tell it that “mark@glenellynmedia” is an acceptable, non-spam sender of mail to you.

One more thing: A number of you have asked for a copy of various past issues. If there are copies of 2e Newsletter from this past year that you’d like to have for yourself or to pass along to someone else, all six of our back issues are available in print and electronic form. (Click on Archives to see what articles are available and for ordering information.)

Happy Fall (in the northern hemisphere, anyway). We thank you for reading 2e Newsletter. We hope you enjoy this issue.
